7 Tips for Exhibiting in Germany

Germany, two thirds of all the world's keynote trade fairs take place in Germany (about 160 international trade fairs) now. Germany stages leading international industry shows and exhibitions and trade-fair activities in Germany account for almost $10 billion annually.

Different cities hold different theme-related fairs and their trade show and exhibition venues boasts an impressive average of 27 - 35 halls (averaging 650,000 sq metres). More than 30,000 exhibitors and approx. 2 million visitors from more than 200 countries annually benefit from facilities and services of the highest standard.

On a market characterized by rapid growth it is therefore not surprising that Germany occupies a top position in the global trade show industry.

Do take note:

1) Etiquette: Nowhere in the world is punctuality more important than in Germany. Be on time for every appointment. Arriving just two or three minutes late can be insulting to a German executive, especially if you are in a subordinate position. Avoid putting your hands in your pockets during a conversation, as it is considered rude.

2) Music: You must contact GEMA, a German artists’ organization, to license music that you plan to play in your booth. Go to GEMA to download the correct forms.

3) Voltage: 220 Volts (European two-pin plug with grounding required).

4) Unions: There are no strong unions. You can walk your own exhibit into the venue and build it yourself.

5) Drayage: If you use a German contractor or booth builder, the drayage charges are built into the cost of booth construction.

6) Booth materials: Certificates are required for flammable materials. Certificates issued by U.S. authorities are accepted. Check to see if the venue wants a translation of the certificate.

7) Banner materials: Materials for banners and graphics used within the booth must be fire-resistant. Fire marshals can test banners and graphics on the spot.
